Sophisticated and slick, like all W Hotels, this 31-storey San Francisco hotel started out as the epitome of urban chic. It makes sense that this monument to cool is situated close to the Museum of Modern Art at Mission and Howard. According to our sources, though, the SF outpost of W is feeling just a little bit tired. Added to that, the W still insists on charging visitors for WIFI access, a concept so outdated that we've lowered its ranking from 5 stars to 4 and lowered our review from Highly Rated to Very Good.
That said, the W Hotel still attracts a fashionable clientele, and if you want to do some celebrity sightings this swanky hotel is the place to be. Hey, is that Sharon Stone in the Living Room Bar? Is she glad to see me? The W Gang have put their fun stamp on everything, including the names of the rooms — choose from Wonderful, Spectacular, Cool Corner or Fabulous. If it's a special occasion opt for the Fantastic Suite or Extreme Wow Suite.
In a word or two — cool design. The action starts in the lobby with mauve leather ottomans and blue velvet sofas making it feel like either a fashion show runway or a movie set where Dean Martin might appear. The three-storey entry is punctuated with striking pieces of furniture art — grab a board game and pull up a cowhide chair.
In the evening, head to either the Upstairs Drink Boutique for signature cocktails, or the Living Room Bar for a more intimate setting. The in-house restaurant is known for its innovative California cuisine. When you're ready to chill, visit the Bliss Spa, the 5,000-square-foot mecca of health, with a glass-roof pool and hot tub area.
The hip factor extends to the guest rooms, which are decorated in stunning whites and bright colors. Although trendy, The W Hotel understands about comfort, too — with upholstered window seats, luxurious beds with goose down comforters and pillows. Goose down not your thing? Choose another pillow from the official W Pillow Menu! Relax on the chaise lounge and open the blinds to reveal the spectacular city views.
Sleek bathrooms are finished with green glass countertops, shiny steel sinks that gleam and filled with Bliss body care products. But it's the eclectic touches, like the mini-me Buddha statues and kaleidoscopes, that make it feel like home (only better!). Pets are welcome at the W and are pampered with dog walking, grooming, litter boxes, beds and bowls. Amenities include a Whatever/Whenever Concierge service where you can ask for anything, anytime.
