A Grand Opera House In San Francisco – 2017 Season

The San Francisco Opera is the second largest opera company in North America and was founded by Gaetano Merola in 1923. The first performance was on September 26, 1923 when it performed La Bohème conducted by Merola. Today the SF Opera season offers about seventy-five performances a year of ten different operas.

The opera company has been in its current home, the War Memorial Opera House, since 1932. The classic beaux arts structure was not built by a small group of wealthy patrons, instead the funding came from private citizens who encouraged San Franciscans to subscribe. It's opera for the people, by the people. There are three operas being staged between May and July, with the new 2017/2018 season beginning in September.

Rigoletto by Verdi

Verdi's grand opera, Rigoletto, is full of emotion, drama, twists and turns. The story is set in the northern Italy during the gritty 16th century, in the town of Mantua. This is one of Verdi's most popular works and has been very popular since its premiere in 1851 and is based on the play Le roi s'amuse by none other than the Grand Master of 19th-century French literature, Victor Hugo.
