What's more laid-back, larger, and cheaper than Napa Valley, but just as much fun? If you answered either Sonoma, Sonoma County, or Sonoma Valley, you're right! All three of those terms describe the extensive and beautiful wine country that is just east of the Napa Valley, and a bit closer to San Francisco.
And why not chose Sonoma over Napa? There are more wineries, lots of good food, and lodging in Sonoma tends to cost less. Since it's an easy drive from Sonoma to the Napa Valley (about 20 minutes over the Mayacamas Mountains), you might want to make a hotel in Sonoma your base for exploring both wine regions. And that money you save on Sonoma lodging? Use it for a few extra bottles of wine.
Sonoma wine country is much bigger than the Napa Valley, giving you a larger selection of hotels and hotel locations. And in our favorite local towns — Kenwood, Healdsburg, and Sonoma — are the most luxurious lodgings in the whole county.

Not only are accommodations in Sonoma generally more affordable than in Napa, there are more budget hotels to choose from. That's certainly shown in our curated list of the top five budget hotels, and we wouldn't hesitate to stay at any of these.
Our favored budget options are located in Santa Rosa, the town of Sonoma, and in the county countryside.
As we have said before, what better place than the Wine Country to hunker down in a cozy B&B? We love the friendliness of bed and breakfast inns, the relaxed pace, and the great breakfasts. In the town of Sonoma, in Glen Ellen, and in Kenwood we've found four B&B inns that we recommend, and one we advise you to avoid.
