It's amazing what a $25 million facelift can do! It was in 2016 that the Hilton Hotel on Union Square comopleted a multi-million dollar renovation that transformed this 1970s monster hotel into a stylish, luxurious setting with minimalist decor and a distinctly Asian flavor. Fast forward to the present and they're updating the update — refreshing the hotel for the 21st century. Think modern, stylish and oh-so comfortable.
The mammoth Hilton Hotel on Union Square takes up an entire city block, In fact, it's one of the largest hotels in California! The hotel consists of three buildings that connect with the original main structure, including a 36-story tower and a 23-story landmark building with nearly 400 guest rooms and suites. This luxury hotel won't be your first choice if you're looking for intimate or romantic lodging. But it's a good choice for those traveling on business and convention-goers and those who want to be right in the middle of things.
Soaring 36 floors above the city, the downtown Hilton Hotel has spectacular city views and bay views. It's easy walking distance to many the famous San Francisco destinations — Union Square, of course (4 minutes) Market Street (3 minutes), the Ferry Building (20 minutes), and MOMA (11 minutes). Fisherman's Wharf is a pleasant 30-minute walk, passing through North Beach.
The guest rooms are airy and tastefully decorated with blond wood, large work desks with ergonomic chairs. Even the standard guest rooms include down-filled pillows and generously sized work areas with built-in plug-ins. Luxury touches include granite countertops, high-floor views from level twenty to twenty-five, and a comfy bathrobes.
For a special stay select one of the Junior Suites, with a view of the bay or, if you prefer, a skyline view. Better yet, there are the suites with a separate parlor in one or two bedrooms.
Dining options include the Urban Tavern, serving great California food in a pub-like atmosphere. Currently, while the lobby's under renovation, you can dine on the 46th floor at Cityscape Restaurant with wonderful San Francisco city views.
But perhaps the coolest thing about the Hilton Union Square is the rooftop pool, with surrounding rooms that overlook the pool. So, if fitness (or, like us, poolside lounging!) is your thing, you can refresh yourself in the pool and whirlpool found on the 16th floor deck. For even more fitness there's a 13,000-square-foot health club. On a negative note, the Hilton still insists on charging its guest for WIFI access, a concept so outdated that we've lowered its otherwise great rating from Highly-Rate-Plus! down to Highly-Rated and from 5 stars to 4.
