If you're looking for good, predictable & basic accommodation in San Francisco, you might want to consider one of the city's Comfort Inns. The Van Ness location is central to most attractions you want to visit and offers wonderfully spacious rooms — especially for SF. It's not high-end luxury, but then again you're not paying exorbitant rates.
Further afield, there are two Comfort Inns just outside of San Francisco, both are near the airport and we peg one of them at Highly Rated. A little bit of hotel history, Comfort Inn (now called Choice) was the first hotel chain in the USA, started in 1939 by a group of 7 motel owners in Florida. Today, there are 6,300 Comfort Inns around the globe.
True to its name, Comfort Inn By the Bay is only about 5 blocks from the bay and close to so much else — the cable cars are just three blocks away, and the Marina, Ghirardelli Square, Fisherman's Wharf ,and Lombard Street are just a short walk away. The rooms are comfortable, modern and spacious. We'd describe the decor as happily neutral with dark wood accents. The building itself is a nondescript tower, but he advantage of the tower is its views!
Ask for a room on a higher floor with a view and be rewarded with great vistas of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Warning, if you're facing the other way, you get a view of the neighboring apartment building. Some guests complain about street noise and the "ghetto" breakfast room.
Nonetheless, this is a good family hotel. Book a suite and get a spacious room with a queen bed, a rollaway, and sofa bed. Also, be sure to ask for a room with a mini fridge. There's a free continental breakfast with baked goods, hard boiled eggs, and kids love the make your own waffle station. Breakfast is for early risers, available in a 3 hour window from 6:30 to 9:30 AM. Guests also like the reasonable parking rates. Bottom line — great location, reasonable rates for SF, clean, spacious rooms. (Photos below, top left and top right.)

This airport hotel rates higher than the Comfort Inn Airport North location. It costs a bit more, but it's worth every penny. Here's why —
Guests love the spacious rooms, comfortable beds and proximity to the airport. (See photo above, at bottom left.) Also, guest complaints are gentler than those for the Airport North location. The staff are found to be friendly and helpful and the free shuttle service to the airport is a plus. Bottom line — recommended accommodation serving the airport.

A very standard airport hotel. Rooms are clean, spacious and offer the same neutral color palette as the Van Ness location in the city. There is no hotel dining option, however there are many restaurants in the area. We especially like the outside seating area. (Photo above, bottom right.) Some guests take advantage of the low prices and travel to the city daily for San Francisco sightseeing. Rooms are clean, and are equipped with a mini-fridge and microwave, however, some guests complain about the noise from the nearby CalTrain station. Bottom line — very basic accommodation.
