St Francis Hotel San Francisco – Classical Luxury & Modern Convenience

Where can you experience the rich and colorful history of turn-of-the-(19th-)century San Francisco, while luxuriating in a modern hotel atmosphere (the result of $40 million restoration)? You probably guessed it — the Westin St Francis in San Francisco, where you'll be surrrounded by the hotel's historic luxury trademarks — classic balconies, decorated marble columns, and handcrafted woodwork.

Westin St Francis Hotel

Built in 1904, the St. Francis Hotel San Francsco is the second-oldest hotel in the city (the Palace Hotel is the oldest). It was the dreamchild of wealthy railway magnate, Charles Crocker. It was his idea to create a luxury hotel that would attract his millionaire friends as well as the rich and famous from around the world. It was a grand success, but only two years later, like the Palace, the hotel was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. But that didn't dash Mr. Crocker's dream. In its place, he built an even bigger and more luxurious Italian Renaissance-style building.

What You Can Expect at Westin St Francis Hotel

In two big words — Classic & Modern. In the historic Main Building, you find high-ceiling guest rooms, crown moldings and crystal chandeliers. In the Tower Building, the rooms have a modern flare with commanding skyline views. Today, all the rooms have been updated with stylish furniture, state-of-the-art installations and safety upgrades.

The St. Francis might be most famous for the glass elevators that zip up to the 32nd floor for one of the best views in the city. Even if you're not a guest, you're welcome to take a ride to the top. Some visitors make it a point to ride the elevator every time they're in San Francisco. (Hey, don't point that finger at us!)

There are four restaurants to choose from at this Westin hotel. For casual meals in an elegant setting, visit the Oak Room. For a signature cocktail, or glass of wine with appetizers, visit the Clock Bar, while Caruso's is the place for specialty coffees and light pastries. On special occasions, or for a well-deserved treat, we heartily recommend Chef Michael Mina's award-winning Bourbon Steak restaurant. He brings years of culinary excellence to an artful menu incorporating fresh, seasonal fare.

Throughout the year, the Westin St. Francis celebrates the seasons. In November, the pastry chefs work overtime to create a magical 12-foot gingerbread castle. The edible castle rotates and is put on display in the grand lobby for the entire holiday season. The hotel is located on the steps of Union Square and is surrounded by the best San Francisco shopping, theaters and restaurants, with a cable car stop just outside the front door.
