1. An Inn 2 Remember

An Inn 2 Remember

Innkeepers Alice & Paolo have created an experience equal to any high-end Wine Country getaway. The room names read like poetry: Jasmine Suite, Wisteria Suite, Palm Garden Suite, Mimosa Suite, Rose Garden Room, and Corn Flower Room. A gourmet breakfast is served every morning at 8:30 am. There are also other nice touches like bicycles to use, the wine passport (see comment below), gazebo and hot tub. Despite being in a desirable area, prices are reasonable, starting in mid-$100s per night, (depending on the season).

Bottom line — Classic California inn with tons of pleasing details.

Great location, good breakfast! The winery passport was an amazing touch as well as the bikes! So fun to be able to bike to wineries (that were free to drink at because of the passport Alice gave us!) The rooms were a great size and very clean! Try the coffee! So good!"

2. Olea Hotel

Olea Hotel

This intimate B&B has just 15 rooms, each is decorated with clean lines, modern furniture, white walls and big windows to let all the natural light in. It's an adult-only resort, perfect for a couple's getaway to Sonoma. Book a Garden Cottage and feel like you've escaped to a magical land. The cottages are nestled into the rambling garden and have their own fireplaces, and direct access to the hot tub.

And let's talk about the breakfast! It's prepared by a trained pastry chef with extensive experience in the kitchen. Local ingredients are used to create a lavish two-course breakfast. Spa services are also available.

Bottom line — Everything done right. Just enough luxury, whimsical touches, and modern amenities.

The breakfasts were amazing. The beds were comfortable. The staff was unfailingly friendly and helpful. On a couple of the nights we were there, we bought groceries and wine in town and the staff offered to provide us with plates and silverware. We then ate in one of the several outdoor sitting areas on the property. Very accommodating place and people. We will be back!"

Kenwood Inn & Spa

Kenwood Inn & Spa

The Kenwood Inn has real curb appeal. Its European styling is enhanced by rambling ivy, manicured gardens and a central courtyard with a fountain and pool. This is an adults-only resort and a real boon to those who are traveling without children. We like the Tuscany suite; it feels like a luxury apartment in the hills of Tuscany with views of the vineyards of Sonoma.

If you're feeling particularly decadent, book the Bath Butler service, where the spa is brought to you. Your butler will stock your room with luxury bath salts, candles, bath & massage oils to help you unwind. A hot breakfast is served between 7:30 and 10:00. Plus, there is an afternoon wine bar and dinner is served in the evening. The Inn is likely to sell out long in advance.

Bottom line — European styling. Some reviews say it's too expensive but hey, you're in Wine Country, one of the most sought-after destination in the USA.

Fabulous location. Property was reminiscent of Europe. Wait staff was excellent. Friendly and very attentive. Our villa was very private, comfortable and well maintained. Breakfast was a wonderful experience. Our plane was late and we did not arrive until the stroke of midnight. We were escorted to our room, fireplace was lit, and soft music was playing. Great ending to a long and exhausting day."

4. Best Western Sonoma Valley Inn

Best Western Sonoma Valley Inn

Yep, it is a Best Western, and its high rating is based on its central location, clean rooms, and budget prices. Sonoma Valley Inn rooms are basic-motel-plus. Book a premium king room and relax by your own wood-burning fireplace (with mini fridge and coffee maker).

Or go for the gold by booking the Junior Jacuzzi suite with a fireplace, private balcony or patio, four-poster bed, and a separate seating area. Rooms start in the low $100s per night, which is an amazing bargain in Wine Country.

Bottom line — A good choice if you're on a tight budget and don't mind staying in a motel.

Better than you think a Best Western would be. We stayed in the Krug Suite. The room had a small refrigerator, loveseat, fireplace and large whirlpool bath. The bed was comfortable."

5. Cinnamon Bear Creekside Inn

We have included the Cinnamon Bear Creekside Inn because it is a Sonoma bed & breakfast and some people like it. Yes, the WIFI is free and the rates are reasonable, but judging by the reviews and reading between the lines, we'd say that if you can — in fact you should — spend a few more dollars and aim for higher ground. And, as one guest noted, "Didn't see a creek anywhere. A bit disappointed by that."

Bottom line — The Inn is very close to the highway and many guests note that noise is a factor.
