Here's why we love boutique SF hotels — they offer more personal care and service, they're filled with vintage details. They generally have a European sense of styling, and there's something unique — maybe even quirky — about each one. They express their distinctive personality in design details reminiscent of literary salons of the 1920s at the Hotel Rex, tasteful Italian decor at the Villa Florence, or the nautical theme at the Argonaut.
In another article we concentrate on boutique hotels that are located at or near San Francisco's central landmark, Union Square. But here let's look at our favourite and top-rated charming and stylish SF hotels scattered in other iconic neighborhoods of the City by the Bay.

This nautical-themed boutique hotel is right by the water and close to all the activities that center around Fisherman's Wharf.
Formerly a Kimpton Hotel, the Argonaut has retained all the creative aspects that have made it a regular favorite of visitors — meaning you enjoy all the extra touches like a free wine reception, toys for the kids, great service, and remarkable views on the bay.
Another of one of our fave SF hotels, another fabulous bay and bridge view! It is San Francisco, after all, and you want to take advantage of the amazing scenery.
After the Embarcadero freeway was torn down following the 1989 Earthquake, the Harbor Court got another lease on life with direct views opening across the waters and the Bay Bridge. Head to their Japanese restaurant, Ozumo Sushi Bar and Robata Grill for a fix of freshly-made sashimi, sushi and hand-rolls.
The lobby sets the tone for the entire hotel design. Gather around the stunning hand-sculpted Art Deco fireplace for a glass of free wine, or coffee service in the morning.
There are plenty of classic touches like the restored 1911 skylights and a secret garden hidden on the rooftop. Travelers enjoy the work desks and free WIFI.
This Joie de Vivre Signature Hotel offers rooms that meet high standards of design and comfort. In our review we peg it at Highly-Rated.
The Carlton is filled with vintage travel paraphernalia like globes, maps and books, yet retains the elegance of the nearby Union Square neighborhood. The restaurant Saha, delivers Arabic fusion food with delicious success.
We loved the dizzying growth and the quirky character of the Kimpton SF Hotels. Founded in San Francisco, at one time there were about 10 Kimptons in the city.
Today the Kimpton chain has spread to many other cities, and there are only two remaining in the City by the Bay. But they are good ones! The charm, service and attention to detail remain. And they haven't lost the fun. Check our reviews of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel and The Buchanan.
