Napa Bed and Breakfast Inns – The 5 Best Ways To Live The Dream

These Napa bed and breakfast inns — that we rate as Superb, or even Superb Plusare located in the city of Napa. For those not familiar with the Napa wine region, the city has a population of about 80,000, while the county has about 140,000. Over the past 30 years the city has transitioned from a working-class town to a major tourist destination. It may come as a surprise that the average 3-Star hotel price tag is in the $400 per night range!

We've examined the whole gamut of Napa bed and breakfast inns and have unearthed our favorites — the highest-rated B&Bs in the heart of the city of Napa. If you're seeking the countryside or would rather be in a small town, read our other articles where we review Wine Country B&Bs —

1. Inn on Randolph

Inn on Randolph

Although the inn is in the city limits of Napa, the location feels like the country. The historic mansion is set on a one-acre estate with gardens and terraces. Breakfast is a two-course affair, always with a hot entrée. (There are gluten-free options.)

Cottage suites have historic names: like Fowler, Randolph, Laurel, Franklin and Washington. All suites and guest rooms were renovated in 2014. The Laurel Suite has its own white picket fence and private garden. And if you're traveling with the family, the Laurel can be adjoined with the Franklin cottage. The Inn on Randolph garners a near-perfect 95% approval rating from guests, and we give it our very highest rating.

Lovely property only a half mile from downtown Napa. A great spot to stay if you're exploring Napa Valley, a bit further if you're more interested in the Sonoma side of Wine Country. Staff is extremely helpful and attentive. We enjoyed our room and breakfasts very much! Would certainly recommend!"

2. Candlelight Inn Napa Valley

Candlelight Inn Napa Valley

We like the sounds in the Creekside Cottage with French doors that open to a private balcony overlooking the Napa Creek. It also has a private hot tub and fireplace, ideal for a cozy, romantic Napa getaway. The historic inn was built in 1929 and is set in a grove of redwood trees.

The cottages and guest rooms are decorated in a casual, country style. Some have private fireplaces and four poster beds. There are also many packages to choose from that include wine tastings, hot air balloon rides and lunch on the wine train. Another near-perfect guest approval. Bottom line — perfect for those who prefer a country-style decor with faux antiques and flowery curtains.

The innkeepers were warm and welcoming. They gave us great recommendations for wineries and restaurants. The inn is beautiful. The breakfast was outstanding. We will absolutely stay there again."

3. La Belle Epoque

La Belle Epoque

This Victorian mansion feels like country living but is actually right in the city of Napa, close to local wine bars and restaurants. Guests rave about the gourmet breakfast created by the in-house Cordon Bleu trained chef that's served in the dining room or parlor. What you can expect are a freshly made cheese souffles, warm poached pears with caramel sauce, and melt-in-your-mouth tender scones.

Guest rooms are named after grape varietals — Merlot, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Cabernet, Chardonnay and Zinfandel. The most requested room is the Elizabeth Suite, with a bay window, antique furnishings, French country blue & white wallpaper, and private balcony. Bottom line — The decor is a little over the top with ruffle, etc, but the breakfasts and extra touches like sparkling wine and chocolates on arrival make up for it.

The breakfast was outstanding and the blackberry scones at tea time were to die for. The inn keeper was wonderful and even made us scones for our early trip to the airport!"

4. Stahlecker House B&B

Stahlecker House B&B

Once an apple orchard, this Napa bed and breakfast inn was built in the 1940s. The casual inn has two fireplaces in common areas as well as private fireplaces in each guest room. An antique ice box holds refreshments for guests during the day and there's a tea & cookie service in the evening. Rooms and suites have canopy wicker beds, some with window seating, four poster beds and access to your own private balcony.

Bottom line — not exactly luxury, but the B&B feels more like staying with friends or family. Lots of frilly curtains and wallpaper. But, still, it gets high ratings from guests, and a Superb from us!

Wonderful stay. Good recommendations for wineries, restaurants, art. Great breakfast and beautiful garden to relax. Lovely hosts."

5. Blackbird Inn

Blackbird Inn

Blackbird Inn describe itself as a "California Craftsman in downtown Napa". And they're right! It's a handsome inn with a rugged stone fireplace, graceful wood panelling, and furniture from the Craftsman era. Book Guestroom 8 and you're in for a treat. The superior king suite has its own fireplace, private patio, and a wrought-iron four-poster bed.

We like that Blackbird Inn pays special attention to breakfast and includes hot entrees like artichoke quiche, Grand Mariner French toast, blueberry pancakes, and speciality muffins like pumpkin, blueberry and buttermilk. They even have their own book of recipes, The Kitchen Cookbook. Another reason to like the Blackbird — wine & hors d'oeuvres are part of the nightly ritual. Bottom line — Clean, masculine design with delicious breakfasts.
