The 5 Top-Rated Hotels in South San Francisco

Sure, some hotels in South San Francisco are cookie cutter accommodations lacking in personality and amenities. But, dear reader, there are a handful that rise above the rest. These top-rated choices offer personality, charm, and details like beautiful views, fully equipped kitchens, and outdoor recreation areas.

And because you're outside the city (and nearer to the airport, SFO) you can expect prices to be at least 50% less than in San Francisco central. Sure, you're not in the middle of the San Francisco city action, but if you're traveling as a family, these hotels give you breathing room.

1. Inn at Oyster Point

Inn at Oyster Point

This one is heads and shoulders above the rest of the hotels in South San Francisco. Guests love the eclectic decor, the continental breakfast, the beautiful views of the marina, and the restaurant on site. They also love the fireplace, comfortable beds, and best of all, the informal setting.

Inn at Oyster Point does not feel like a standard, soulless business hotel, common around the airport. Our best reviewer said, "this place is a hidden gem in these days of huge chain rentals."

It's ideal for those who like to walk or run in the morning since the marina is a great outdoor location. Visitors also love the South Harbor Waterfront Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant serves Latin & American cuisine; favorites are the Ceviche Classico and the Tiradito, a Peruvian-style sashimi made with ahi tuna, ginger, ponzu and avocado. Free WIFW and free parking.

2. Marriott Residence Inn – Oyster Point

Marriott Residence Inn

Two blocks from Oyster Point Marina Park, this hotel feels more like a resort feel than an airport hotel. To our way of thinking, the fully-equipped kitchens in all the rooms are a huge bonus. There is a free breakfast, but we love having our own cooking facilities. There's a 24-hour quickie mart on location and a grocery shopping service can be arranged. Have the hotel pick up some thick steaks and grill them in the outdoor grilling and picnic area.

Guests rave about the beautiful surrounding area and the clean and comfortable rooms. They say it's a perfect place for families with young children. The hotel is also close to the San Bruno Mountain State Park, Oyster Point, and only four miles from SFO. Free WIFI, outdoor pool, and free airport shuttle service.

3. Hilton Garden Inn Airport

Hilton Garden Inn Airport

Guests love the spacious rooms, budget prices, and friendly staff. What we like is that there is an on-site restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Complaints are very few and relate to noise during construction, which we assume is over. Another little bonus that adds to the high rating is the washers and dryers available. Book the the Executive Room with a king-size bed, a Serta mattress, and a pull-out sofa.

The Garden Grille & Bar features American cuisine with Boston clam chowder, shrimp cocktail, gourmet mac & cheese, Baja BBQ chicken flatbread, and fully loaded potato skins with crumbled bacon, Brie and sour cream. Yum! There's also a Kids Menu. For dessert, try the Hilton signature Rockslide Brownie with pecans, caramel, vanilla ice cream and hot chocolate sauce. Free WIFI and shuttle service.

4. Hampton Inn San Francisco Airport

Hampton Inn San Francisco Airport

Hampton Inns never top our must-stay list, but let's see… Guests rate this hotel high for its excellent location, friendly staff, and value for money. There are a variety of rooms including a one-bedroom suite with a king bed, accessible rooms, and standard queen rooms. Some of the elite rooms include a terry robe to use during your stay.

Breakfast is available, but it's a soul-deadening affair with plastic-foam plates, chewy scrambled eggs, and No-Name fruit loops. We'd give breakfast a big miss. Breakfast aside, there is a free shuttle to take you back and forth to the airport. Surprisingly, though, this Hampton gets a decent rating.

5. Larkspur South San Francisco

Larkspur South San Francisco

Turn off from Highway 101 to this highly rated, family-friendly and pet-friendly hotel just a few miles from SFO. There's lots to like about this budget hotel — guests love the use of the free laundromat (perfect for a road trip pit stop) and the large rooms with tons of appliances (fridge, microwave, dishwasher, hair dryer, iron). The negative reviews are minor, things like no safety box in room and wanting better coffee. We can live with that. Our plan would be to stock up on local, good food and cook up a feast in the spacious kitchens.

The lobby has a fireplace and cozy chairs, maybe they wouldn't mind if you brought down a glass of wine to have by the roaring fire. If you're traveling with the family, think about booking the most spacious suite with a separate kitchen, living room with pull out sofas and a separate bedroom with two queen beds. When do we move in?
