Courtyard by Marriott – A Cheap Hidden Gem

Courtyard by Marriott

Unlike the cookie-cutter hotels that litter the SFO highway, the Courtyard Marriott actually has a bit of personality. Guests like the fact that you can walk around Oyster Point Waterfront, right outside the hotel. The rooms are clean, with nice views, the decor is tasteful, and the overall ambience is "bright and engaging". Book the One-Bedroom Suite, clocking at at 600 square feet with a separate bedroom, living room, mini fridge & microwave.

The in-house Bistro serves breakfast and dinner with light meal options along with beer, wine, and cocktails. There's also a Starbucks on location. What really appeal to us are the outdoor patio and the light-filled lobby with floor to ceiling windows and great seating options. We rate this place a winner — pay under $200 per night and get a lot for your money.

Embassy Suites by Hilton

Embassy Suites by Hilton

This complaint about Embassy Suites is going into our Hall of Shame — "Lady at front offered kids apples without asking, then charged me $12 for 3 apples."

Guests have liked the Koi pond, the general layout, the clean rooms, and easy access to the airport. Overall, it gets a solid rating, sneaking in to the Highly Rated category. There is a free motor coach to downtown San Francisco on Fridays and Saturdays. And since it's part of the Hilton family, you can take advantage of their myriad of specials, like the Family Fun package and various discounts.

There is in-house dining offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner (rare in airport hotels). You might like the free drink available in the evening reception in the atrium. Book the Executive Suite, it's on a high floor and has extra space with a separate living room.

Travelers Inn

Travelers Inn

Alert the media! This is a family-owned motel on South San Francisco hotel row. Very rare. Rooms come equipped with a mini-fridge, microwave and free WIFI. Guests love they can walk to the BART station, making the Travelers Inn possible as your headquarters on your SF vacation. As one reviewer pointed out, "Why bother with city centre prices?" It takes less than 30 minutes to get from the hotel to the city (on BART). Guests also find the staff to be helpful and friendly, and the cleaning staff to be top-notch.

Hotel V – Super Cheap!

Hotel V

You really can't do much better that this at around $100 per night. The hotel has recently undergone a renovation. Guests love the location, frequent shuttle service, friendly staff, and clean new bathrooms. The rooms come with a mini-fridge and microwave. However, there are a few complaints about noise from the freeway.

One guest was surprised to find out that the hotel wasn't closer to the city! Do note that hotels in South San Francisco are close to the airport, not the the center of the city action. However, when you look at the hotel's website, with pictures of Fisherman's Wharf, you can see why there was confusion. Hotel V sells itself as an "elegant boutique hotel" in the city, when in fact they are an okay airport hotel, a good half-hour's drive from Fisherman's Wharf.
